Everyone at TekBusters would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year. When we hope Canada will be taking gold in the Olympics.

Backups

At TekBusters we’ve had a few calls recently where computers had crashed, usually in the middle of a very busy day and taking the work with them. While we can usually recover the data and get our customers back working, it’s not always possible so easily. Iit takes time and is quite often costly. That’s why we have backups.
Most people don’t realise the value of a good backup until they lose the document they’ve been working on for weeks, or their accounting program loses all it’s information just before they file a tax return. Some things you just need to be sure are there.
Photos for instance. We print out so few of these with computers and digital cameras, yet if the computer is lost then so are these and they’re not replaceable.
There are a few types of backups. You can backup to an external disk or tape and it’s always best if this is kept at another location in case disaster strikes. There are also online backups, where your computer will back up your important data automatically over the internet. These are very easy to use, with a set it and forget it philosophy. Just pick what you want backed up, say photos, emails and documents and then leave the program to do the rest.
All your data is encrypted before it is sent, so no one else can read it. It’s then sent to a secure location where is kept in 2 locations in case disaster strikes there. This way your data is always secure and available to you. You can access it easily online from anywhere.
If you’d like to get your backups set up and secure your peace of mind, give us a call on 778.294.2917. We can offer many solutions, tailored to suit your needs and budget.

Is your computer slowing down?

Over time, the hard drive on your computer get’s very messy and files get fragmented. This is like a filing cabinet where nothing is put back in the right order. After a while it takes a long time to find anything, and on your computer this slows everything down.
Luckily sorting through files and reordering them is just the kind of work a computer likes, so there is a program to do this.

It’s called disk defragmenter and in XP is something you should run manually every 2 -3 months. With Windows Vista this is usually scheduled to run automatically, but it is worth checking it every now and again. Use the Analyse button in Disk Defragmenter to see if it has been running.
Note : If you have a Solid State Hard drive (usually found in Netbooks) you should not run Disk Defragmenter In Windows XP, the easiest way to run Disk Defragmenter is to open My Computer, right click on the drive you want to defragment and then click on Properties, then Tools, Defragment Now.
Running this can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours. While you can continue to use your computer while this runs, it can be very slow, so it’s best to run a defragment when you won’t be using it. Take a coffee break.

Defragmenting, as well as speeding up your computer can also help prolong the life of your drive, now how is that for a reason to run it?
Other things that can slow down your PC are:
• Having too many programs open at once
• Not having enough RAM (memory)
• Malware, spyware and viruses
