Android Tablet – the ASUS transformer

Is it a tablet or is it a laptop? It’s both. The Asus Transformer is an Android Tablet that has a keyboard to dock to. With a 10″ screen and weighing just 680g it makes an ideal tablet. We just got one here and found it easy to use and the screen is really good, great viewing angles, though like most tablets not so good in direct sunlight. Running Android 3.0, it also comes with full Flash support (unlike some other tablets) and as well as mini HDMI and a headphone jack it has a Micro SD card slot allowing you to expand the memory available.
Then you add the keyboard, and this adds 2 USB ports and an SD card reader as well as a multi touch mouse pad and well, keyboard. It also extends your battery life from 9.5 to up to 16 hours. Not bad at all. It also includes a 5MP rear camera, a 1.2MP front camera and will shoot HD video.
Not a bad tablet at all and currently my favourite toy.

Speed up boot times

A new piece of software being developed examines all the processes and services that start with your computer and helps you choose to stop them starting or delay the startup until after boot. It’s called soluto and can be downloaded from www.soluto.com. If you understand a bit about which programs are stalling your computer this will help you choose which ones to uninstall or delay.
For example by stopping some toolbars from starting, some automatic updates from programs I rarely use and uninstalling some software that came with my laptop but I don’t use I was able to knock 10 seconds off my boot time.

Merry Christmas

Everyone at TekBusters would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year. When we hope Canada will be taking gold in the Olympics.

Backups

At TekBusters we’ve had a few calls recently where computers had crashed, usually in the middle of a very busy day and taking the work with them. While we can usually recover the data and get our customers back working, it’s not always possible so easily. Iit takes time and is quite often costly. That’s why we have backups.
Most people don’t realise the value of a good backup until they lose the document they’ve been working on for weeks, or their accounting program loses all it’s information just before they file a tax return. Some things you just need to be sure are there.
Photos for instance. We print out so few of these with computers and digital cameras, yet if the computer is lost then so are these and they’re not replaceable.
There are a few types of backups. You can backup to an external disk or tape and it’s always best if this is kept at another location in case disaster strikes. There are also online backups, where your computer will back up your important data automatically over the internet. These are very easy to use, with a set it and forget it philosophy. Just pick what you want backed up, say photos, emails and documents and then leave the program to do the rest.
All your data is encrypted before it is sent, so no one else can read it. It’s then sent to a secure location where is kept in 2 locations in case disaster strikes there. This way your data is always secure and available to you. You can access it easily online from anywhere.
If you’d like to get your backups set up and secure your peace of mind, give us a call on 778.294.2917. We can offer many solutions, tailored to suit your needs and budget.

Welcome to TekBusters

Hi and welcome to the TekBusters Blog. I guess I should start with some introductions. My name is Gerry Gainford and I moved to Canada from Ireland in Januray 2008. In February 2009 I started TekBusters Computers with my wife Ursula to provide IT services to home users and small to medium businesses in the lower mainland. We service customers from White Rock to Abbotsford and Mission and in to Surrey and Richmond.
Most people need an IT person, and most small businesses cannot afford a full time one. To have a qualified IT person on staff would be very expensive so that’s where we come in. We can provide a qualified IT person on site when needed.
From calling us when you have a question on what computer to buy or calling us when you see that dreaded blue screen, we’re there when you need us. We can also providee regular scheduled maintenance, taking care of updates, of installs, backups and cleanups. We can keep your computer systems running in top condition and minimise your downtime.
You have better things to do that look after your computers, so get your own on demand IT department and let you get back to what you do best.
